Dear Londoner...
NEWSLETTER 22nd Feb
Dear Londoner...
This week I visited six London boroughs to spread the word about my manifesto on crime, Making London Safer. I want all Londoners to hear my ideas so that they are reassured things will change under a Johnson Mayoralty. If you haven't read my pledges yet, please click here to find out how I plan to make London safer.
And if you have some time to spare this week, it would be fantastic if you could join my team as we campaign across London. If you think you could come and help out, please email Charles@backboris.com with your contact details.
See you on the campaign trail...
Boris

How you can get involved...
On Wednesday 27th February 2008, a reception and rally will be held at Bonham's on New Bond Street to raise funds for the London Assembly Campaign - and we'd like you to join us. The event will run from 7.30 to 9.30pm and will allow guests a private viewing of 20th-century modern English art. Guests will include the future Mayor of London, Boris Johnson, members of the Shadow Cabinet and a number of other Conservative MPs. Tickets are just £35 - or two tickets for £60 - and can be booked online at www.kcfc.org.uk. See you there!
Or for something a little different...
In the run-up to the Mayoral election there are many other elections going on around London for council seats - and good results in these will help build towards a Boris victory in the main race. So, if you'd like to lay the foundations for a win on May 1st by helping out, please get in touch with the contacts for these local campaigns...
The election for Cheam Ward in Sutton takes place on 28th February and the local contact for volunteers is Paul Scully at paul[@]scully.org.uk
The election for Highgate ward in Haringey takes place on 6th March and the local contact for volunteers is David Douglas at ddouglas[@]conservatives.com
The election for Marlborough ward in Harrow takes place on 13th March and the local contact for volunteers is Rachel Joyce on rachel.joyce[@]hotmail.co.uk
This week on the campaign...
Boris visits Romford
Boris headed to Romford this week to witness the work of the local Community Safety Partnership team and catch up with GLA Member Roger Evans and the Leader of Havering Council, Cllr Michael White. While out on patrol he visited a group of local traders who are making heroic efforts to fight anti-social behaviour in conjunction with the police, before heading to community station Link FM to tell residents how he would make life better in the outer boroughs of London.
Boris speaks to the London Chamber of Commerce
This week the businessmen and women at the heart of London's economic success were watching as Boris addressed the London Chamber of Commerce Breakfast, where he outlined the three main ways that the Mayor's office can champion London's business interests:
Firstly, the Mayor cannot simply abdicate responsibility for London's economy to the Chancellor of the day. Rather than shrugging his shoulders and claiming 'it is nothing to do with me, Guv', he has to stand side-by-side with London's businesses and champion their causes in Westminster.
Secondly, the Mayor has to recognise the importance of infrastructure to the business community. Problems with transport, housing and crime aren't just problems for Londoners as individuals; they are huge problems for London business.
Thirdly, the Mayor needs to learn from business when looking at his own administration. For too long City Hall has been home to a flabby, wasteful government. Every penny the Mayor receives from Londoners and Central Government must be accounted for and spent wisely.
Boris speaks out against post office closures
Boris went to Enfield this week to defend two post offices threatened with closure, and to listen to local residents' thoughts on the situation. Under current plans hundreds of post offices face the threat of closure, leaving many high streets without a branch and countless elderly residents without a central hub to their community.
Commenting on the post office consultation, Boris said: "Londoners are being treated in an arrogant manner by this Government and their Mayor - who has failed time and again to stand up for their concerns. I will stand up for Londoners and urge everyone to get involved in the consultation so that closures do not go ahead." You can have your say by emailing consultation[@]postoffice.co.uk
Boris addresses UK Youth Parliament
Boris went to the Ministry of Sound in South London this week to speak to the UK Youth Parliament. At yet another youth event which Mayor Livingstone declined to attend, Boris was delighted to have the opportunity to discuss the key issues of gang culture and knife and gun crime with the young people who have experienced it first-hand.
What the papers say...
