Another busy day for Boris...
After a morning appearance on the Vanessa Feltz show on BBC Radio London, and a series of meetings with representatives of the London cab trade in the West End, Boris headed off to Croydon.
Boris spent well over an hour at the Croydon Rape and Sexual Abuse Support Centre (RASASC) talking to volunteer counsellors before hearing the story of a woman who sought support of the centre to overcome her distressing experiences.
The RASASC was set up in 1985 and is currently the only centre of its kind in London and the South East. Due to this fact and their reliance on volunteers the centre cannot deal with every request for help they receive.
Speaking to Backboris.com later Boris said:
"Official figures show that over Ken Livingstone's two terms in City Hall, rape in London has increased yet there is now only one centre like this for the whole of London.
"This is why I have pledged to cut the funding for the Mayor's spin budget and use this money to dramatically increase funding to this and three other centres to support services for rape victims.
"It is more important to fund Rape Crisis Centres than press officers. Hearing a personal account from someone who has been raped and trying to understand just some of the trauma she has had to go through makes me even more determined to change London's priorities."
