How to vote

Voting by post - how to fill in your ballot paper

If you are not yet registered to vote by post, you have missed the deadline to do so. Instead, you can vote in person on 1st May.

If you are registered to vote by post, you should now have received your postal ballot papers from your local council.

You should have received the following items from the Returning Officer:

  • A set of three ballot papers; one pink, one yellow and one peach
  • A ballot paper envelope
  • A Postal Voting Statement
  • A return envelope, addressed to the Returning Officer

Here's what you should do to make your votes count:

  • On the PINK ballot paper, mark a cross next to Boris Johnson's name in column one.
  • After voting for Boris in column one, you can select a second choice candidate if you wish (although there is no need to do so) by marking a cross in column two.
  • On the YELLOW ballot paper, mark a cross next to the name of your local Conservative Assembly candidate.
  • On the PEACH ballot paper, mark a cross next to the Conservative team.
  • Put the coloured ballot papers (and nothing else) in the ballot paper envelope.
  • Sign the Postal Voting Statement and write your date of birth in the boxes indicated.
  • Place the Postal Voting Statement and the ballot paper envelope into the return envelope.
  • Post the envelope as soon as possible. It must arrive by Thursday 1st May at the very latest.
  • If you think that your ballot paper may not arrive with the Returning Officer in time, you can take it to a local Polling Station on election day, sealed in the return envelope.
  • For more information, please call your local council's Electoral Registration office.
