Westminster

Recorded as Westmynster in c.975, Westminstre in 1066, that is 'the west monastery', from Old English west and mynster, so called because it lay to the west of the City of London. The present Palace of Westminster was built in the 1840s to be the new Houses of Parliament after the old Palace was destroyed in the disastrous fire of 1834.
