Wendleswurthe 11th century, Wandlesorde 1086 (Domesday Book), Wandesworth 1200, Wannesworth 1393, that is 'enclosed settlement of a man called Waendel', from an Old English personal name and Old English worth. Oscar Wilde spent the first six months of his sentence at Wandsworth Prison in 1895.
