Southwark
Sudwerca 1086 (Domesday Book), Suthgeweorke c. 1100, Suthewerk 1259, Suthewark 1298, that is 'southern defensive work or fort', from Old English suth and (ge)weorc, referring to its situation at the southern end of London Bridge and to the south of the City. The borough of Southwark once comprised a City ward known as 'Bridge Without' (that is outside the City wall), created in 1550 and abolished in 1978.
