West Shene 1258, Shene otherwise called Richemount 1502, West Shene nowe called Rychemond 1515, Richmond alias Shene c. 1522, Richmount 1577, a name transferred from Richmond in North Yorkshire (meaning 'strong hill', from Old French riche and mont), when Henry VII rebuilt the old royal palace at West Sheen after its destruction by fire in 1499 and renamed the even grander building after his Yorkshire earldom.
