Newham

A recent name artificially created in 1965 for the 'new' London borough comprising East and West Ham. Ham from the Old English meaning 'area of dry land bounded by water or marsh.' The distinguishing affixes East and West show that the original estate was already divided by the late 12th century. Whereas East Ham remained an agricultural village until the late 19th century, West Ham was relatively populous and industrialized even in medieval times.
