Cyninges tun 838 (Anglo-Saxon charter), Chingestune 1086 (Domesday Book), Kingeston 1164, Kyngeston super Tamisiam 1321, Kingstowne upon Thames 1589, that is 'the king's manor or estate', from Old English cyning and tun. Kingston upon Thames is the earliest recorded 'Kingston' and became a major market centre in medieval times.
