Hamersmyth 1294, Hameresmithe 1312, Hamyrsmyth 1535, Hammersmith 1675, that is '(place with) a hammer smithy or forge', from Old English hamor and smiththe. Hammersmith was part of the Bishop of London's manor of Fulham until 1834.
